Last year I embarked on a massive adventure to Australia, to work and travel 1-2 years. It was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime but, to no fault of Australia, it ended up being a living nightmare and I had to come home.
Marie, a reader & blogger at High Style Life, read about my difficult experiences in Australia and decided to offer some suggestions for those of you who are in the same situation. Some restorative travel experiences for those who are in Queensland, Australia specifically.
Hopefully you won’t have an experience like I did in Australia, but if you do and you’re in Queensland, Australia, then maybe this post can give you ideas on restorative breaks you could take. Enjoy!
There is a good reason why so many people, myself included, love traveling. Some of my best and most wonderful memories were made while traveling abroad. There is something special about traveling, simply embarking yourself on a journey and going someplace you haven’t previously visited. With every trip I took, I have become richer for one new experience which is irreplaceable.
Unfortunately, not every trip goes perfectly and without any problems. I stumbled upon Ella’s article about a traumatic experience she had on her journey to Australia. Her resilience and her refusal to give up traveling inspired me.
This gave me an idea. This could help anyone who had a traumatic experience while traveling and is scared of giving it another try. I would like to share with you 5 weekend getaway ideas in Queensland that, in my opinion, can help you recover from trauma and make you fall in love with traveling again.
While in Queensland, I highly recommend a visit to Hamilton Island. It is a perfect island getaway for a whole weekend. I flew there directly from Brisbane; for those who are scared of flying there is a ferry that goes from Airlie Beach. You won’t find an island with better resorts, restaurants and activities along the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling along the shore is a must, the marine life you can see on Hamilton Island is amazing. Rent a kayak and enjoy a relaxing ride, or if you prefer something more exciting try wind surfing or rent a jet ski.
Relaxing at Catseye Beach or taking walks along it is a great experience; but, one of the most amazing things I have done on Hamilton Island was bushwalking. I packed some food for the day, and went for a long walk. This way you can explore the island and climb to the overlook and enjoy the amazing view. There are rest stops along the trail so you can take a break when you feel like it.
Secrets on the Lake
For those of you who prefer traveling with their significant other, Secrets on the Lake can be a piece of paradise. It is located north of Brisbane, in the city of Montville. This couples resort has ten luxurious tree houses overlooking the Lake Baroon. Every tree house is unique and it is named differently, some of them have fireplaces. Every cottage has their own spa, so you can enjoy a relaxing bath while you enjoy the lake view.
With every treehouse being unique, you will get a different experience with each of them. For example, Waterlilies is closer to the lake than others, and it has its private walkway to it. It also has a hanging fireplace. If you want an even better view, try the Possums cottage. It stands 8 meters above the ground and has a sunken spa bath inside. Whatever your troubles are, I am sure this resort will help you and your significant other forget all about it.
One of the most relaxing travels I took while visiting Australia was Port Douglas. It is just an hour drive north from Cairns. The drive up there was even more enjoyable since we took the Great Barrier Reef Drive. This road is surrounded by Coral Sea on one side and a rainforest on the other. Both the Daintree rainforest and Great Barrier Reef are on the World Heritage list. What made my trip there even better was picking one of the pet-friendly Port Douglas resorts, that is both affordable and intimate, meaning I could bring my Labrador retriever, Max, without worrying.
While there, I went snorkeling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef, where I got to witness amazing marine life. I took a helicopter ride; the view of the rainforest was astounding. What I regret missing was going for a safari through the Daintree rainforest.
I’m glad I had enough time to visit Lizard Island. Many people recommended this getaway and I got the chance to see why. This is a secluded northern island beach on the Great Barrier Reef, so I got the chance to enjoy the clear blue ocean and fish I never saw before. We went diving and saw colorful tropical fish, there was also a chance for fishing but I took a pass on that one.
The beaches on Lizard Island are covered with gorgeous white sand, it simply calls you to take a long relaxing walk on it. It has its own national park, which still officially belongs to the Dingaal Aboriginal people. Even though I spent only a couple of days on Lizard Island I got the chance to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery Australia has to offer.
If you have a little explorer inside, like I do, then Capricorn Caves are the place to visit. The caves are located north of Rockhampton, in Central Queensland. The Capricorn Caves are over 390 million years, and there is no excuse to not visit them if you have the chance. What I enjoyed the most was the visit to the Cathedral Cave, there are actual wedding ceremonies held in this cave.
Unfortunately, I missed the Underground Opera which takes place twice a year in this cave. However, the adrenaline rush I felt while exploring the place was unlike anything I’ve ever felt before . After an exciting and thrilling cave exploration, I had the chance to enjoy some drinks at the Bat Bar and play some pool with other visitors. For people who like a little excitement, the Capricorn Caves should be on their itinerary.
The memories and friendships I made on my travels are something I will cherish forever. I wouldn’t want anyone to give up traveling because of one bad experience. This is why I would strongly recommend one of these getaways in Queensland. They are a sure way to make you fall in love with traveling all over again.
